Mucuna pruriens, also known as “velvet bean,” is a legume. This creeping vine can be found in India, the Caribbean, and tropical areas of Africa. It is a powerful adaptogen known in Sanskrit as Atmagupta, which means “secret self,” hinting at its magical properties.
Mucuna pruriens has been used in Ayurvedic medicine for over two thousand years and is said to be balancing for all three doshas: Vata, Pitta, and Kapha. It can be added to smoothies, elixirs, teas, dressings, and desserts.
